How SLS supported the Peterson couple to find a new home

Don and Alison Peterson* lost their home in Ben Lomond to the CZU fires of 2020. Afterwards, they began looking for a new place to live and considered a factory-built “pre-assembled” ADU unit that would be delivered and allow them to live on the land they already own. They visited the ADU factory and wanted to purchase the home, but grew concerned by the large contract that contained many confusing terms. They reached out to Senior Legal Services for help with reviewing the contract before signing, with hopes that the staff would be able to ascertain all the risks in this particular situation. The terms of the agreement would be binding once signed, so they were hoping for some guidance of what to expect. SLS looked through the contract and explained various specific clauses to them. In addition, the staff detailed that most big company consumer contracts are created in the company’s favor and that it’s important to know exactly what is in it. The Petersons thanked us for our advice and they were grateful for our help! After the trauma of losing a home to a wildfire, the difficult and costly decisions that follow can be especially hard. SLS was fortunate to help the Petersons get back onto their feet and into a new home.

“We were glad SLS was there to walk through the contract!”
